Chemical Exposure in the Gulf is often first experienced as a flu-like illness. Dizziness. Nausea. Nosebleeds. Vomiting. Headaches. Coughing. Difficulty breathing. The smoke from oil well fires contained a cocktail of chemicals, notably benzene, hydrogen sulfide and sulfur dioxide as well as quantities of particulate matter. Benzene is a human carcinogen, and can cause various forms of cancer from prolonged exposure. Exposure to high levels of benzene shows association with leukemia cancer. Benzene-related leukemia has been reported to develop in as short as nine months.

Baking soda (sodium bicarbonate) should use to diminish toxic poisoning from the Gulf disaster. Sodium bicarbonate is the number one item in any protocol to treat exposure to harsh chemicals coming from the oil disaster. The very best treatment, when one first notices a foul smell, taste or flu-like symptoms is to jump into a bath with several pounds of bicarbonate and magnesium salts.

We do not actually know what chemicals are in many of these dispersants, or what their long-term health effects will be but we can prepare for worst case scenarios and if things turn out less threatening than we think we can be thankful. We have reports through the grape line that they were even spraying at night just to keep it as hidden as possible but we know from the government that they are spraying and injecting millions of gallons of chemicals that are vastly more toxic than the oil itself.

The Gulf Oil disaster though is no joke and should not be taken lightly. It is our planet bleeding and our greed and need that have taken us to the edge of what is humanly possible to deal with. To be seriously alarmed at this point is appropriate. From a medical perspective shouting out warnings is appropriate, though we don’t really know how many people are at risk. Is it just 10s of thousands or is it going to be millions? Or if this goes on long enough will it be hundreds of millions of people?

What we are all already downwind of is the decisions and attitudes of the elite of this world who are onstage with their dealings of this mega disaster. Not easy for them to hide and cover up as much as they seem to be attempting to do in the Gulf. Look how they got away with their description of events on 9-11 and how steel frame buildings could fall in on their footprints at pretty much the speed of gravity. They got their wars out of the experience. But the Gulf is different and unpredictable as we can see with the first tropical storm threatening to sweep into the area.

Bob Herbert of the Times was recently asking, “How loud do the alarms have to get? There is an economic emergency in the country with millions upon millions of Americans riddled with fear and anxiety as they struggle with long-term joblessness, home foreclosures, personal bankruptcies and dwindling opportunities for themselves and their children.” Massive layoffs are on the horizon for city and state workers across the country. American society is going to be gutted right across its middle and exactly where it will hurt the most. States, especially California, that are in financial crisis are opening up their prison doors. Budgets across the nation are in freefall and that’s not only deflationary, it’s devastating to a way of life that Americans simply got too used to.

Developed countries with big budget deficits must start now to prepare public opinion for the belt-tightening that will be needed starting next year now says the IMF. John Lipsky, the International Monetary Fund's first deputy managing director, said the scale of the adjustment required was so vast that it would have to come through less-generous health and pension benefits, spending cuts and increased tax revenues. The IMF in their divine wisdom favors maintaining fiscal stimulus in 2010 in most advanced economies, but then the brakes need to be slammed on so it is being advised that governments should make it crystal clear to their citizens why a return to prudent policies is a necessary.
